July 24, 2009 · Whitby, Ontario
It was playoff atmosphere tonight at Iroquois Park Sports Centre supplied by a combination of raucous fans and a great game. The event was game two of this best of five series that the Lakers led 1-0 before the contest. Game one was Wednesday night and the Lakers took that one 13-10.
Tonight the defense for both teams played solid and that was obvious as the score at the end of one period was 2-1 for Peterborough and after forty minutes was 5-2 for the visitors.
Mike Miron was stellar in the Redmen net and had his hands full as the Lakers outshot the Redmen in the neighbourhood of 55-35 over the night. Meanwhile, veteran Pat O’Toole was solid in the Lakers net and got the 7-4 win to go up 2-0 in the series.
The Redmen had the early lead as Scott Campbell sent the ball on net to find his teammate Derek Hopcroft cut across and get a piece of it. The visitors scored twice in the opening frame including a power play marker by Shawn Evans.
The home side scored first in the middle frame to tie the contest. However, five minutes later the Lakers would go on to score three straight in a span of 90 seconds and that would be the difference on this night.
The Redmen closed the gap to 5-3 just two minutes in to the final frame but they would not move any closer. The Redmen had a great chance in the last three minutes as Kyle Sorenson was called for a double minor for Checking From Behind; they were able to score once on that power play. The Lakers scored two more that period for the 7-4 win and hold a two games to none lead in this best three of five series.
Penalties as called by Frank Lawrence and Scott Goudie totaled 30 minutes, 16 to the Redmen and the balance to the Lakers. Peterborough scored three times on the power play compared to once for Brooklin.
The teams return to action in less than 24 hours. The Redmen faithful hope that the younger Redmen team can regroup and capitalize on the quick turnaround. The Redmen will have to steal one in Peterborough or the 2009 season will come to an end.
